CyberMAGiK (M1646) Chipset
Core Logic Chipset for AMD Mobile AthlonTM Processors
CyberMAGiK combines two high performance chips, Acer Labs’ ALiMAGiK1
north bridge and Trident’s CyberBlade XP graphic accelerator. It is the
industry’s first mobile integration chipset with 128-bits dual pixel graphic
engine and DDR memory support.
Benefits of DDR Technology
CyberMAGiK uses SMA (Share Memory Architecture) to eliminate the need of
local frame buffer. In the past, SMA was considered by some as low in
performance due to inadequate memory bandwidth. With graphic core improving
the speed drastically and CPU’s need to access main memory simultaneously,
SDR’s bandwidth is not enough. The arrival of DDR memory technology will
change this impression. By transferring twice amount of data of the original
SDR memory, memory bandwidth is no longer the bottleneck for graphic
integration chips. Consequently, the support for high resolution panel
without losing overall performance is feasible. Furthermore, DDR memory
operates at 2.5V and using the scheme of delaying write data from command
will lower the power consumption. Therefore, DDR memory is a perfect fit for
mobile space.
Core Logic Features
The north bridge is based on ALi’s ALiMAGiK 1 chipset (M1647) which
supports Athlon?family of CPUs with front side bus (FSB) of up to 133MHz
double rated. At the same time, this chip interfaces with traditional PC-133
SDRAM and advanced DDR-266 memory with peak bandwidth reaching up to 2.1
GB/sec. Key core logic features are listed as following:
- Supports all AMD Slot-A / Socket A Athlon?and Duron? processors.
- 64-bit data bus and 32-bit addressing.
- Supports back to back write transfer.
- Optimized processor command scheduling and reordering.
- Supports up to 512 Mbit SDR/DDR SDRAM.
- Maximum memory size: 3 GB.
- x-1-1-1-1-1-1-1 back-to-back page hit.
- CAS before RAS and self refresh for SDRAM.
- Fully compliant with PCI Rev. 2.2.
- Dynamic memory pre-fetch algorithm and programmable post write flush
algorithm.
- Supports concurrent PCI bus burst transfer at zero wait-states.
- 133 MB/sec data streaming for PCI bus to memory with minimum latency.
Superior 3D/DVD Engine
CyberMAGiK possesses 128-bits 3D/DVD engine. Besides all standard
features that most graphic accelerators support, CyberMAGiK features cubic
map lighting, multi-textured, full-screen anti-alias, and texture edge
sharpening.
In addition, by incorporating THAMATM (Trident Hardware Assisted MPEG-2
Acceleration), hardware motion compensation and Inverse Discrete Cosine
Transform (IDCT) are supported. Ultimately, CyberMAGiK delivers an advanced
digital media capability.
Graphic Logic Features
CyberMAGiK’s graphic engine is based on Trident’s Cyberblade XP. It
possesses dual pixel pipes and a hardware transform and lighting (T&L) unit
to provide sufficient rendering power to meet high-end graphics demands. In
addition, CyberMAGiK integrates high speed LVDS with external spread
spectrum support to reduce EMI. On the panel side, this chip is capable to
support SXGA and SXGA+ high quality panel. Key graphic features are listed
below:
- 128-bit internal data path running at 133MHz clock.
- 256 Raster Operations (ROPs), single-cycled.
- Full-featured DirectX 7.0 implementation.
- Set up engine with 32-bit IEEE floating point precision.
- Lighting engine with per pixel, diffused and specular reflection
lighting.
- Advanced Rendering engine.
- Texturing engine with single-pass multiple-textures processing.
- DVD hardware assist with Motion Compensation.
- Integrated LVDS transmitter.
Power Management
Coupled with ALi’s feature-rich south bridge (M1535+), CyberMAGiK
achieves a low power solution for mobile platform. Dark Green Power
Management functions such as Power on Suspend, Suspend to RAM, Suspend to
Disk, PCI bus, CLKRUN and Dynamic Clock stop are all supported. In addition,
AMD’s PowerNow!? technology is also enabled via the chipset. On the graphic
side, the 3D/2D engines are dynamically clocked down when idle without
software intervention. AGP power management is implemented through BUSY# and
STOP#. Mini-driver function calls are used to support ACPI.
The scheme of graphic controller and north bridge integration reduces the
cost for PC manufacturers. The 128-bit dual pixel engine with DirectX 7.0
support and THAMA architecture bring high end graphic performance with
unparalleled digital media capability. Finally, with DDR memory support,
power consumption is significantly reduced. Taking into account of cost,
performance, and power, CyberMAGiK is the exact solution for the mobile
space.
