1.Voodoo3
At COMDEX '98 on
November 16, 1998, 3dfx announced Voodoo3.The Voodoo3 chip integrates
2D/3D and has a dual texture processing unit like Voodoo2.Voodoo3 will
currently be identified as 2000 and 3000 models.Voodoo3 2000 will run at
125MHz clock frequency with 300MHz RAMDAC. Voodoo3 3000 will run at a
clock frequency of 183MHz and has a RAMDAC of 350MHz.
Perhaps for
confidentiality reasons, the video card of the Voodoo3 shown is actually
a BANSHEE graphics card, just with a "Voodoo 3" sticker on the chip.
December 14,
1998- 3dfx announced it was going to acquire STB systems and start
making their own voodoo3 graphic cards. On February 12,
1999, 3dfx released Voodoo3 2000 and Voodoo3 3000, which were planned to
be listed in April.Voodoo 3
2000 featuring a speed of 143 MHz, and up to six million triangles and
286 megatexels per seconds at resolutions up to 2048x1536. It will be
available in either PCI or AGP formats, and boasts a 300 MHz RAMDAC and
16 MB of SDRAM.Voodoo 3
3000 runs at 166 MHz, and will feature 350 MHz RAMDAC and 16 MB of
graphic memory. it will feature a TV/S-Video Out jack. Also released the
Voodoo3 3500,Voodoo 3 3500 runs at 183 MHz and is expected to deliver 8
million triangles and 366 megatexels per second at resolutions up to
2048x1536.it will feature 350 MHz RAMDAC, a TV/S-Video Out jack. But it
will also support digital flat panel displays through 3Dfx's proprietary
flat-panel drivers, LCDfx.
The Voodoo3
2000's had ram rated for 7ns, the 3000 for 6ns,3500 for 5.5ns.
Because 3Dfx no
longer provides Voodoo3 chips to major manufacturers such as Diamond and
Creative, 3dfx's former partners have defected to Nvidia and ATi. This
serious decision-making mistake made 3Dfx lose the support of many
manufacturers.
3Dfx only
provided some manufacturers with Voodoo3 chips to make motherboards with
integrated graphics cards, and later released some restrictions, and
some non-3Dfx Voodoo3 graphics cards appeared.
The performance
of the Voodoo3 graphics card is comparable to the TNT2 graphics card
announced by Nvidia on March 15, 1999. TNT2's flagship TNT2 Ultra
graphics card performance even beat the Voodoo3 3500 graphics card,
which is the first time a Voodoo graphics card has been surpassed by
Nvidia's Riva series of graphics cards.
Since 3DFX did
not centrally destroy all VOODOO graphics card engineering samples,
there are quite a few scattered in the hardware collection industry,
which not only makes VOODOO graphics cards a popular graphics card
collection, but also makes the history of 3DFX graphics cards very
clear.

ATi entered the

which was in the same period as Voodoo3 MCM, although the 3D performance
was poor, still dominated the mobile application market. 3dfx's Voodoo3
MCM should look pretty good, somehow it didn't get implemented, maybe
3Dfx doesn't take the mobile graphics market seriously.

next-generation product of eight VSA-100 chips.

2.Voodoo4
At Comdex '99 on November 15, 1999, 3dfx Interactive announced the new
VSA-100 graphics chip, as well as Voodoo4 4500 AGP & PCI, Voodoo5 5000
PCI, Voodoo5 5500 AGP, Voodoo5 6000 AGP graphics cards based on the new
chip. And revealed pictures of Voodoo4 4500 AGP, Voodoo5 5500 AGP and
Voodoo5 6000 AGP graphics cards.
(From pc.watch.impress.co.jp)
VSA-100 is the product of the improvement of Voodoo 3 core, adding 32bit
color depth, AGP texture, 24 bit Z buffer and other functions. The
biggest feature of the VSA-100 is that it can connect up to 32 VSA-100s
via SLI (Scan-Line Interleaving).
In February 2000, 3dfx publicly demonstrated the Voodoo4 and Voodoo5
graphics cards for the first time at Cebit. On April 26, 2000, 3dfx publicly demonstrated the Voodoo5 6000 graphics
card for the first time at WinHEC 2000.

2.1 3dfx
The VSA-100 chip was first developed on the Voodoo4 Evaluation Board,
but the Voodoo4 graphics card was launched after the Voodoo5 graphics
card. 3dfx's slow product update cycle, under the heavy blow of nvidia's
horrible 6-month product update, made the single-core Voodoo4 graphics
card vulnerable, and had to launch the dual-core Voodoo5 graphics card
first to rival the GeForce2 GTS. The Voodoo4 graphics card was released
on October 13, 2000, almost 4 months later than the Voodoo5 graphics
card.

tested with 3Dmark2001 and other software, and the test value is a
little higher than that of the Voodoo4 4500 graphics card of the same
model. Finally, someone found that the R536 of this card was

possible power supply problems .June 9, 2000- Voodoo 5500 cards ship

Voodoo5 5500 AGP graphics card yield is not high. In 2002, there were
rumors that after nvidia acquired 3Dfx, a batch of Voodoo5 5500 graphics
card semi-finished products flowed into China. This batch of cards
should be defective. The baffle of the Voodoo5 5500 AGP graphics card I

At Comdex '99
on November 15, 1999, 3dfx Interactive announced that it would
launch the Voodoo5 6000 graphics card based on the VSA-100 graphics
chip. At Comdex'2000 a year later, 3dfx announced that it would stop
making the Voodoo5 6000 graphics card. The Voodoo5 6000 graphics
card has inherited a high reputation due to the cool design of the 4
cores, unreleased products and the myth that 3Dfx created the market
share of 3D graphics cards in that year. In October 2001, the
Voodoo5 6000 graphics card was auctioned on eBay for the first time
and sold for a high price of $2,025, thus officially announcing the
birth of the graphics card collection. There are less than 100
Voodoo5 6000 graphics cards in existence, and they have become the
leader of graphics card collections and even computer board
collections.

This 3700
version Voodoo5 6000 graphics card (PCB date is 3700weeks (Rev A),
PCB#210-0391-001-A) has the most collections, there are about 60,
and most of them can work normally. Its performance is comparable to
the Geforce2 Ultra graphics card. The other Voodoo5 6000 graphics
cards have only a few collections per version. In addition, there are
three types of Voodoo5 6000 Later Evaluation boards:
PCB#210-0391-001-A2, 2600 Weeks (Rev A2), PCB#210-0391-001-A3,3400 Weeks
(Rev A3) and PCB#210-0391-001-A, 3900 Weeks (Rev A). |
5. Daytona
Daytona
(VSA-101) is more like a VSA-100 chip manufactured with a newer
process, cooler operation, less heat generation, and no need for a
heat sink. Claimed DDR support does not improve performance. The
Daytona chip graphics card was originally scheduled to retail in
January 2001, but was aborted due to Nvidia's acquisition.

6. Rampage
After 3DFX was founded in March 1994, it began to
develop
hardware and chips for the gaming market such as arcade machines. On
November 6, 1995, 3Dfx announced Voodoo Graphics, a 3D graphics
accelerator designed for 3D entertainment applications on arcade and
home computers. and achieved great success.
In 1997, the
Sega Dreamcast game console solicited two competing designs: a unit
code-named "Blackbelt", a system designed in the United States using
3dfx technology, and "Katana", developed in Japan using NEC and
VideoLogic technology.
on July 22,
1997, 3DFX Voodoo2 competes with PowerVR Series2 Sega Dreamcast game
console graphics processor fails,3Dfx wasted over a year of precious
time. Although Voodoo2 later achieved great success in the PC
market, 3Dfx is still very concerned about the game console market
that has not yet made a breakthrough, and plans to use new
technologies to improve the performance of 3D chips and crush
competitors.
In 1998, 3dfx
started the Rampage project. The Rampage development project is a
new technology for the new graphics card, which is expected to be
several years ahead of the competition once it debuts. The research
and development direction of the Rampage project tends to use 3D
auxiliary chips to work with new 3D chips, so that 3D performance
can be greatly improved.
In February
1999, the Rampage project carrying the 3dfx game console dream was
first verified on the Voodoo3 chip graphics card. On March 10, 2000,
Bill Gates officially announced the Xbox plan at GDC2000. 3dfx,
believing rumors that the Xbox will use Gigapixel graphics
technology, faced the poor progress of the Rampage project and
announced its plan to acquire GigaPixel on March 28.Unexpectedly,
Nvidia, the new king of 3D graphics cards following Microsoft's
technical route, won the Xbox contract, and 3dfx's competitive game
console graphics processor failed again. 3dfx has spent too much
energy and money because of the game console dream, and it has
become the main factor that causes 3dfx to crash.
In November
2000, the Rampage project announced its initial success. This
so-called Rampage chip integrates two VSA-100 cores on one chip, and
its performance is weaker than the Voodoo5 5500 graphics card with
two VSA-100 cores.

6.2 SPECTER
1000
The Rampage
project later plans to develop a SPECTER 1000 graphics card equipped
with a Rampage chip, and a SPECTER 2000/SPECTER3000 graphics card
equipped with 1 or 2 Rampage chips supplemented by a SAGE hardware
T&L chip. The flagship Specter 3000 will have a bandwidth of 10.2
GB/S and a fill rate of 1600-2000Mpixels/S.

(From
thedodgegarage.com)
The
performance of the SPECTER 1000 graphics card developed in November
2000 was only comparable to the Geforce 256 graphics card that
integrated hardware T&L into the graphics core in August 1999. At
this time, the GeForce2 Ultra graphics card with the same
performance as the SPECTER3000 graphics card has been launched. Is
it necessary to continue the development of SPECTER 2000/SPECTER3000
graphics cards? Rampage does not have much innovation in technology,
and it has to rely on additional chips to improve performance, and
the development cycle is too long, and it will eventually die, which
directly causes 3DFX to completely lose its fighting spirit.3dfx
sold most of its assets to Nvidia on December 15, 2000, and 3dfx has
since become history.
